I mostly agree with Venkat views.

Along with the technical/functional skills, we also
need those "soft skills or communication/management
skills" to help us for a successful career in general
in any job and in particular so in Information
Technology:

1. To project ourselves correctly and to communicate
with impact.
2. To resolve the conflicts/differences that may come
across in adopting a particular approach to solve an
issue/problem before your team.
3. To observe and practice the fact that there is a
huge difference between "Professional disagreement"
vs. "Personal disagreement" on any work-related
argument, eventhough those kind of differences
invariably end being personal differences!.
4. To realize the fact that no matter how much you
work hard or make an excellent contribution, it won't
change your own world unless you could project
yourself correctly and make your boss recognize and
acknowledge your contribution paving the way for your
career advancement.
5. To network with people around and try to build
relationships. Working hard at your own desk won't
change your position. You should have right contacts
along with your hard work to advance your career.
6. Don't ever pick a fight with your boss. Boss is
always right (no matter what he or she says!) and try
to find a way if you could work around the issue
instead of fighting and losing! If you opt for a
fight or try to annoy your boss, you are the first
target in the next lay-off.
